Pusat Internet Komuniti
Narrowing The Digital Divide
Bridging the Digital Divide with Pusat Internet Komuniti
The Pusat Internet Komuniti (PIK) project, supported by the Malaysian government under the National Broadband Initiatives (NBI), aims to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural populations. As Celcom’s technology partner for this initiative, Nusuara Technologies has established over 175 PIK centers across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak, bringing essential digital infrastructure to areas in need.
Building Access and Opportunity for Rural Communities
Each PIK center serves between 5,000 and 10,000 community members from areas such as Felda settlements, villages, and Projek Perumahan Rakyat (PPR). Beyond internet access, PIK centers provide employment opportunities by employing local graduates as managers and assistant managers. Each center is equipped with:
- 20 computers with high-speed internet access
- Dedicated surfing and training areas
- Facilities for both abled and disabled users
These centers actively engage community members by conducting ICT training programs and events tailored to the needs of different groups: children, women, adults, entrepreneurs, and senior citizens. Through this digital outreach, PIK centers aim to enhance digital literacy and promote ICT-related skills among the rural population.
OTEE Model: Operation, Training, Event, and Entrepreneurship
In managing the PIK centers, Nusuara follows the OTEE model: Operation, Training, Event, and Entrepreneurship, ensuring a holistic approach to community engagement:
Operation
Nusuara has developed a suite of specialized tools to support and streamline PIK operations. The Microsite and WiFi Komuniti are integral parts of Nusuara’s Operation under the OTEE framework.
NMS (Network Management System): NMS is a monitoring and management system used specifically to oversee the devices and equipment at Pusat Internet (PI) locations. It enables real-time performance tracking, issue reporting, and preventive maintenance of all connected devices, ensuring that the technology infrastructure at each PI site is consistently operational and reliable
Microsite: The Microsite is a custom-built platform for managing the activities and daily operations across various Pusat Internet (PI) centers. This system, hosted on Amazon Web Services, includes nine modules to streamline tasks such as content management, training and event tracking, billing, attendance, and asset management. It allows PI managers to monitor and report on training sessions, community engagement, and equipment use, ensuring consistent and high-quality services for digital literacy and entrepreneurial support in local communities
WiFi Komuniti: This initiative provides enterprise-grade, outdoor and indoor WiFi access to underserved or remote areas, including the SAMUR Project site. Utilizing a robust network structure with access controllers, wireless backhauls, and cloud-based firewalls, it connects these communities to essential internet services. The goal is to bridge the digital divide, enhancing accessibility and connectivity to foster local socio-economic development
Training
The Celcom Internet Centre provides a targeted training program to support rural communities by developing essential skills in these key areas:
Digital Literacy
Productivity Tools
Multimedia Skils
Soft Skills
Online Marketing Skills
This program equips participants with a range of digital skills, including basic hardware and software use, internet navigation, and productivity tools like Microsoft Office. It also enhances multimedia and social media skills for digital presence, teaches soft skills like English communication and financial literacy, and introduces online marketing on platforms like Shopee and Carousell to boost e-commerce potential.
OKU Workshop – PI Felda Chuping
The Felda Chuping Internet Center organized a successful OKU Workshop, dedicated to empowering disabled (OKU) students through digital learning. With full support from Malaysian ICT Volunteers (MIV), seven OKU students, along with two teachers, participated actively in this enriching experience. As students of the Felda Chuping Community in Recovery (PDK), they were introduced to the various functions and benefits of the internet, tailored to support their personal and educational needs.
The workshop’s main goal was to build a strong, supportive relationship with the Felda Chuping Community in Recovery (PDK) while equipping participants with essential digital skills. This initiative highlights the internet’s potential as an empowering tool, encouraging OKU students to explore new opportunities, connect with others, and improve their quality of life.
Event
Monthly events reinforce community relationships, such as small agriculture workshops and cyber safety seminars for youth. These gatherings strengthen community bonds and encourage responsible internet use.
